The Buffalo Sabres revealed their long-awaited (and heavily criticized) new logos and uniforms on Saturday.
Nike Roundup:
On Wednesday of this past week, two comments were posted that were vulgar and rude enough to catch my attention. Paul and I believe that the person that posted these comments found the blog through a link from the USA Today article available here. Paul was quoted in the article and had some negative things to say about the current state of uniforms at the University of Oregon (what else is new). Apparently this person who called himself “j” (from here on known as “NikeSuperFan”) couldn’t handle criticism of Oregon’s classy atrocious uniforms, and felt the need to verbally attack this blog, Paul and everyone who “wastes” their time here.
NikeSuperFan first posted at 2:54 P.M. EST on Wednesday. He was responding to Paul’s decision to decline the invitation to appear on a local Oregon radio station. Here is his entry:
Paul Lukas said:
In response to that USA Today article, I’ve gotten several inquiries from radio stations that want to interview me (read: looking for free content to fill their airtime). One was a sports talk station in Oregon, whose producer said that having me on would “help stir things up.” Having been around this particular block a few times, I know that’s a polite way of saying, “Come on our show so we can totally abuse you for making fun of our uniforms,” so I declined.
I did accept an invitation to talk about uniforms on AM 800 CKLW, in Windsor/Detroit, however. They’re gonna have me on at 5:45pm EST. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have streaming audio.
NikeSuperFan said:
[personal insult deleted/IP will be banned if this continues -webmaster edit]
His response was ugly enough that I had to immediately censor it, as you can see above. The record of this comment is still available here.
At this point, I thought it was over. I warned the poster that I would ban the IP address he was commenting from if this continued. Usually people get the point. Not NikeSuperFan.
Only four minutes later, he posted this (permalink):
NikeSuperFan Said:
Paul-What makes you a design expert anyway? You say there is good design and bad design…what the f*ck do you know about design?
You’ve obvously missed the entire point of the uniforms…TO GET PEOPLE TALKING!
Thanks for pushing the agenda.
While this was mild compared to his first post, it was still annoying. I checked his IP and put it into the “blacklist”. This means the person can still view the site but is not allowed to post comments (as of right now, this is the only IP blacklisted). Still, something didn’t sit right with me about his comments. Why so angry? Why so defensive? So, I ran a trace on his IP address. Normally this will return somthing like “Comcast – Philadelphia” or “Verizon – Boulder, CO”. This time, to my complete surprise, it returned “Nike – Beaverton, OR”. I was shocked.
For the benefit of those who don’t completely understand what this means, let me explain. This information tells us that someone at the Nike Worldwide Headquarters (presumably an employee) has been checking this site and has verbally abused those who visit here in profanity-laced tirades. I’m sure some of you are thinking, “So what, what’s the big deal?”. It’s not that simple. Nike has allowed an employee to use company equipment from Nike Headquarters to attack Paul, the site and those who frequent here. Not cool. Most companies would never allow it to happen. In all fairness to Nike, they probably don’t know about it, but it isn’t my job to look into what their employees are using their equipment for, it’s their job.
I could have contacted Nike and informed them what one of their employees had done. I’m sure it’s a fireable offense, but I really didn’t want that weighing on my conscience. Instead, I developed a counter that tracks how often Nike visits the site. It’s not the greatest revenge, but it’ll be interesting to see how much they’re checking up on this little uniform community. Anyway, I wanted to tell everyone here the entire story, because I’ve discussed it briefly in the comments section the last few days.
Feel free to use this thread for technical questions regarding the site along with the regular uniform banter. I’ll be checking in throughout the day.

The ugly logo aside, I also don’t like that the Sabre’s jersey has no striping on the front or back, only on the sleeves. It makes the uniform seem unbalanced. Also, what’s wrong with just blue & gold as the colors? Why the silver stripes too? In my opinion it’s an unecessary color on the uniform.

My two cents on the Nike thing:
1) I think John’s counter is genius. It’s a clever tweak, a playful wink, very much in the spirit of Uni Watch.
2) Personally, I don’t really care if someone at Nike posts nasty things about me, whether here or anywhere else. I’ve certainly written more than my share of nasty things about them, so it’s not surprising that someone over there finally snapped. Whatever. In general, I don’t mind if people criticize me or Uni Watch in the Comments section — negative comments can be valid comments, and I never expected the site to be a fan club. My problem has always been — and will always continue to be — when people post nasty comments about each other. I also wouldn’t tolerate an outsider (from Nike or anywhere else) coming in and bashing this site’s readership. But if anyone wants to criticize me, that’s fair game — I put my work out there and people can react however they like.
3) Similarly, I don’t share John’s outrage over someone “using Nike equipment” to bash the site. Almost everyone who reads Uni Watch does so at work. Why should any readers at Nike be any different?
4) I should point out that a few people from Nike and Reebok are Uni Watch fans. They may not agree with everything I write here, but they appreciate the general Uni Watch concept. By the same token, I appreciate that lots of extremely talented people work at Nike and Reebok, that they’ve done some genuinely innovative things, and that they create some excellent products. My beef with them isn’t even so much about their bad designs but rather that those bad designs are part of a larger branding approach, which to my mind is antithetical to how the fan/team relationship should work. But you all know my thoughts on that already.
5) While further discussions of Nike-related issues are inevitable (I’ll certainly be doing my share), I would like it very much if Nike’s relationship to this site did not become a major topic here. The counter speaks for itself — no need to go on and on about it.
6) John rocks. But by now you’re all realizing that too. I’m lucky to have such an engaged and vigilant webmaster.

I’ve decided to come out and say it: “I like Oregon’s jerseys. However, I don’t think they should’ve changed from these uniforms. Those are, in my opinion, the best Oregon unis ever.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if “NikeSuperFan” was the dope who designed the jerseys. Just being protective of his work……

Were those Sabres jerseys designed by Reebok? Because the striping on the sleeves looks a lot like the triple-stripe on the Atlanta Falcons jerseys……

I posted this in yesterday’s thread before this thread opened, so I’m posting it again. I want to make sure that Mike from Queens sees it. Quasi-apology for the double-post.
Mike from Queens: the monogrammed devil is ‘genius’ (or just dang good) because when I see it, I immediately know that it’s New Jersey. That’s brand recognition at its finest. In addition, the devil who is not The Devil is a sly way of tweaking people who protest that sort of thing. Finally, it’s just damn cute. Genius!
I don’t believe any of this (I support the Wild, though I’m not a huge hockey fan); I just want you to come to MN and wash my car for a year.

Totally random and unrelated, but i’ve never gotten a straight answer on why there are no Hartford Whalers licensed jerseys available. I’ve contacted the NHL a number of times on it with no success. Anyone know who owns the logo, Hartford, the Canes?

I’m a bit odd I guess…I love the simplicity of the Steelers unis for example AND also find worth in University of Nike’s unis…

It looks like the Buffalo Sabres borrowed the Indiana Pacers’ color scheme.
The “Buffa-slug” is particularly offensive because they had a great logo, the original one. How about just putting the classic logo on the new jersey and altering the logo to match the new color scheme?
Actually, my favorite Buffalo logo was the alternate one from the last few years — the “B” with the sabre through it — now that’s genius.

As for those Sabre unis, someone mentioned yesterday that the logo is simply too high on the chest, exposing too much white, making the logo look even worse. Totally agree. And although I like the concept of the number on the front, it looks a tad to big and intrusive. Move it out and up from center, and shrink it from size 12 font to size 10, much better. Also, besides their gloves… I can’t detect any logo creep in there. maybe the goalie’s collar.

I’m a Bruins fan, yet the Sabres are breaking my heart. Thos are possibly the worst jerseys I’ve ever seen in the NHL. Just atrocious. They’ve gone from the best unis in hockey to a total disgrace, twice over.
And shockingly, it seems like Buffalo fans are convincing themselves that they like the unis based on response on another message board.
There sure doesn’t seem to be any great outcry.
If I ever get the Chris Drury jersey I so badly want, it sure won’t be this jersey.
#15 by stephen on 09.17.06 1:02 pm |
the reason why there are no hartford whalers jerseys is because the prvious owner wants nobody to have anything ever associated with the team. maybe he’s asking too much for the rights or he’s just a sour old man, but until he decides to ever sell his rights you will NEVER see the whalers again. even with ea’s nhl game that featured a remake of nhl 94 the whalers were represented by a different team/logo (i can’t remember which one).
as for the sabres jersey, i think they need to bring back the old ones from the glory days. the blue and gold was all they needed. i think 2 colours for nhl teams is just enough. look at toronto, detroit, old l.a. kings, they were simple but effective. 3 colours aren’t bad but too many just makes it confusing.
one more comment on nhl jerseys. to commemmorate the upcoming 2007-2008 seaosn next year, i think the original 6 and new 6 teams should wear throwbacks for when they play each other. it’s celebrating 40 years of nhl expansion and it would be fun to see some old unis shown. dallas can wear north star jerseys. someone whould have to figure san jose could wear golden seals jerseys because of the seals’ california, cleveland, minnisota-merge and minnisota-split to make the sharks. nhl movements can be confusing.

First off, I would like to express my disagreement with what the webmaster did- as it is Paul’s site, and if you aren’t going to leave a post related to uniforms, then, frankly, I think I speak for a majority of the other readers when I say that we don’t care. If some radical wants to say what he wants, which is the point of a blog, I agree with Paul in saying whats the point in censoring him- just sensor the vulgarity of his text. Being a fan of Nike and their products and also of this website, I like the Nike counter, but the last thing Paul needs is any kind of a scuffle with the conglomerate that is Nike, Inc; I certainly wouldn’t want anything to interfere with his contributing the extraordinary content on this site… Lorenzo T. The Bears are wearing their white jerseys today. Interesting — it’s the second year in a row they’ve done that for the first home game.
Well, they trounced the Lions while wearing white in last year’s home opener, so if it happens again this year, that’s good enough for me.
#18 by Brinke Guthrie on 09.17.06 1:09 pm |
this was the first time i saw the buffalo jersey. my first thought was, ‘where’s the rest of it?’ it just looks like a T-shirt.
As far as the Ducks go, being garish just for the sake of being ‘cutting edge,’ (whatever that means) makes no sense.
And..
went into Sports Authority yesterday to buy myself a Niners Reebok shirt (can’t find em anywhere) and the guy there said Under Armour is cleaning Nike’s clock in sales. No contest.

The Dolphins are wearing white at home today when the heat index is 95 degrees forcing the Bills to wear their very dark blue jerseys. Shouldn’t the Bills have either light blue or red alternate jerseys to counter this effect?

I like the Sabres colours, the logo is brutal though.
Hopefully when they wear the retro throwbacks during the season, they will have shells in the correct colours, because the navy pants look silly with the different blue of the jerseys and socks.

Not a huge fan of the lack of symmetry between the two jerseys, either – white jerseys have blue sleeves, but not vice versa.

Im really hoping this white jersey at home trend doesnt continue deeper into the season. I know its because of the heat, but i mean its maybe 80 degrees in chicago right noww, but even in other places it hasnt been hot and they still wore white.
This reminds me of how the NHL switched to colors at home which i found annoying because it had been white at home for years.
In addition to the Bears, the Bengals are wearing white at home, both teams almost never wear white at home, except as mention the bears against Detroit last year.
Anyone else thing the majority of colored jerseys look better than white?

At least the Bills aren’t wearing their all-blue combo. But then again, maybe that’s a “road” thing–they wear the blue pants with the blue shirts at home, and white pants when they have to wear blue on the road.
But seeing how well the Bills are playing right now (I hope I don’t jinx them!), maybe they should wear the white pants more often.

The logo on the Sabres jersey is ugly, yes, but I love the colors used(that shade of navy goes with that shade of gold even IMO better than the old blue and gold did), I actually really think the jersey # in the shoulder looks nice, and unlike most of you, I prefer the lack of gaudy vertical stripes below the logo. I have never liked those, even for the more traditional teams. To me, it’s just fugly.

I just have to say that those throwback third jerseys are way better than the buffaslug jerseys. The buffaslug logo is too small for the amount of space there is on the front and it looks a little weird. You gotta love that striping on the throwback socks. Also, it looks weird wearing the old jerseys with what looks like the new color scheme hockey pants…the colors are off. Interesting, if bizare stuff about the Nike spying. I read the stuff on the origin of the now iconic Michigan “winged” helmet. Anyone else find it interesting that the design started out initially with a seem patern developped by Spaulding. As much as I complain about equipement companies dictating uniforms to teams, I find that story to be hauntingly similar to CoolFlow helmets in MLB, the Riddel Revolution helmets, and the Nike development of the Denver Broncos new unis (remember Nike used that template, although not as colorfull on teams like the Giants, Cowboys, Falcons and Steelers). I guess those corporate guys can get it right every now and again.

The only rules in college regarding numbers are that if you wear 50-79, you can’t be eligible as a receiver on offense.
At Idaho State, we have a kicker-punter wearing 39, a punter wearing 43, and a kicker wearing 87….product of what was available.
Here’s what nuts…many, many teams have double numbers…one guy wearing say #7 on offense, and one guy on the same team wearing #7 on defense. This makes it hell on announcers, and worse, statisticians…the NCAA needs a rule that you can’t have double numbers like that….there’s not 100 guys that are gonna play in a game, so it seems dumb to have double numbers.

Sabres said they had 80 designs they picked through…..and this was the best one ? The article I read also said the design went through 12 revisions. 12 revisions and we got that ? Reminds me for no reason of the Simpsons episode where Bart spreads the strike rumor to the teachers and by the end it ends up a “purple monkey dishwasher”. Tradition,…..what did Buffalo fans do to deserve this ?

I guess Nike wouldn’t be too thrilled to be seeing or hearing about all the Hate Nike Rallies I’ve been attending, where we burn Nike merchandise at the stake; along with our “The Swoosh is Satan” chant; pitchforks in hand and all. (and no, we don’t wear masks)
We consumers don’t like paying premium prices when we should be paying sweatshop prices for our Nike shoes.
Of course I have a boycott on all-things Nike for a while now, we just burn stuff we’ve amassed over the years.
and btw, Oregon’s uniforms blow like pig excrement. Nike, you really shouldn’t design uniforms that hurt people. We’re on to your sick little cruel joke.
I expect a black van with a marked Swoosh on the side to come abduct me when I go for a walk soon.
(can I say all of this on here, Paul & John?)

2 things watching the Browns game.
1. The Bengals holder for field goals has a one bar facemask.
2. Chad Johnson got popped pretty damn good on a play, helmet came off, and had blood all over his jersey.
of course I have no pictures of either, anyone?

That sounds right; the Rams wore white pants in 2001, and I recall the pants having gold stripes down the side. It’s not easy to see in
this picture but it looks like the gold side panel on the jersey (which they used until 2002 I believe)extends down to the pants.
And of course there are the navy blue pants with the stripes. But the gold pants have never had stripes.

Actually, I looked up the airfare and it would be $292 for a ticket this weekends. Plus $50 or so to cover my rental car, and maybe only about $30 in food / entertainment. That would be one night with me for about $400. Obviously a win-win situation if you like young, unattractive men with beer bellies, strange odors, and the personality of a well-trained dog.
Uni-question: what’s the NFL rule on shoe color again? I thought it was only black or white, and that it should be uniform for the whole team. Giants observations from the last two weeks:
Brandon Jacobs with blue outlining his toe. Eli and David Diehl wearing simple black. Jay Feely’s fading blue into black kicking shoe (I know the rules are different for kickers). Plax Burress with a whole lot of red showing. Tiki’s red-accented shoes. Antonio Pierce with serious redness (bonus shot of Dominic Rhodes’ name template coming off. Chad Morton might be the most egregious offender. Someone there with blue socks and red shoes (I know both teams wear blue socks, but the Giants keep more blue showing than the Colts).
So questions are:
Since when was red allowed? How much is too much? These shoes are certainly not uniform. Are other teams as flippantly misbehaved?

Paul,
I am an employee of Nike and read your blog pretty much every day and I love it! There are plenty of Nike employees who think that the Duck uniforms are ugly so don’t paint all of us with a single brush.
Yes, the design is supposed to get people talking, but that should include those of us who think the uniforms are butt-ugly. Nikesuperfan is probably one of the many corporate sell-outs who think that Nike can do no wrong.
Keep up the good work. Go Blue!

Another note about the Cowboys/Redskins game, I don’t know if it’s more obvious now because they’re wearing black shoes, but it looks like many of the Redskins are using an extreme amount of tape on their shoes, including the hosiery-obsessed Shawn Taylor, who just forced a fumble.

The new Sabres jerseys were designed to translate easy to the style jersey Reebok is coming out with. This includes the vertical metallic silver stripe. It’s supposed to continue from the pants, up through the jersey (which would be tucked in like they’re trying to do) and up over the shoulder. It’s supposed to represent a sabre.
The logo is smaller and high on the jersey for the same reason… to look right when the jersey is tighter. See the NHL practice jerseys for an example. The logo is smaller.
The only problem I have with the jerseys is the navy sleeves on the white jerseys. If you just pull a color switch from the navy jersey to the white, replacing the navy with white and vice-versa, you have an awesome design.
As for the alternates, there will be no other set of shells to match the vintage jersey this season. Next season they will have the color adjusted to match the pants (royal/gold, new navy/new gold).

Honestly, I don’t think the bib looks that bad, at least on the white jerseys, where it’s harder to see. On Miami’s jerseys, the bib is always visible and usually ugly. At least the bib isn’t the worst thing that could potentially happen to Michigan. Could you imagine the blue jersey with that one maize sleeve [Virginia Tech, I'm looking at you], or, heaven forbid, a maize jersey.
Could you see Mario Manningham in a maize Michigan jersey?

I live in the Pacific Northwest and see quite a bit of Oregon merchandise worn. The colors and “O” logo on the apparel always look so great that I forget how the uni’s look on game day. Regarding college kickers and higher numbers…
It seems that it has become commonplace in some universities that the low numbers are the most popular for position players. At the University of South Florida, players constantly change to the lowest number whenever possible. When Andre Hall’s 2 became available this year, WR Jackie Chambers turned in his 83 for it. And so forth…
Kickers get whatever’s left, apparently. Ours are wearing 24, 28, 31 and 36, but we had a backup punter wearing 65 last year.

Is there any Law worries about the Nike counter?
Now not getting crazy here but:
1. if I were Nike and caught wind of all this I really wouldn’t like it that someone traced an IP address and made a counter of my company fuming from one emoloyee.
2. Trust me Nike knows the law. If they don’t trust me they have enough resources to find one.
3. Do you really want to spar with a billion dollar company?
4. Personally I think it’s weak his comments were deleted and you told the story of how his IP address was traced. There was no need to trace where it went to, theres no need to get on here and announce where it was traced to. What kind of message are you sending to people that comment. “Hey we always know where you are” Thats not good policy.
Since I didnt see what he said I can’t tell you legaly what could be done, but if he didn’t threaten a life, everything else is all a matter of opinion.
I’m just trying to say, you DO NOT, want to piss off a company like Nike unless you believe you have the resources to do so.
It seems like if Nike does come at you, your defense will be, “Look what he said”. Don’t think that will save you if they legaly could do something.
I’m not a employee of Nike, check my IP it’ll say Raleigh, NC. I’m just saying don’t get in over your head here.

Among all the things Nike could have done, the yellow piping on the Michigan road jerseys is pretty minor. Michigan appears to keep the home jersey as “untouchable” – even though the current version is made in the bib style, it has no trim and even minimizes the Nike swoosh by putting in in the collar instead of on the shoulder. Penn State, Georgia and now USC all appear to use the bib style jersey without any piping.
However, Michigan has played around with the road uniforms over the years – I remember a road uniform with narrow blue/maize/blue stripes and white pants with matching stripes (think KC Chiefs sized stripes). The white pants didn’t last long, but the jerseys hung around. Through most of the 1980s/90s they had a Northwestern stripe pattern (with the wide center stripe in maize), and most recently the road jerseys (the batwing style ones) had a maize stripe above the blue cuff and a blue “M” on the sleeve. I look at the piping this way – you really can’t see it unless you see an extreme close-up shot, and maybe it’s a trade-off for using the tiny swoosh on the collar instead of the normal swoosh on the shoulder.

Martin Grammatica used to have one bent a lot like that back in his days with Tampa Bay. I think the equipment managers just bend the facemask down until the kicker says it is enough out of their way. Since they outlawed the old single and double bars, I’ve seen some oddly cut facemasks on the kickers, particularly on the Riddell Revolution helmets.
