You may have noticed that last Thursday’s ESPN column included a brief mention of John Maxymuk’s Uniform Numbers of the NFL: All-Time Rosters, Facts and Figures (which came out about a year and a half ago, but I just became aware of it last month). It’s a great book, stuffed to the gills with uni-numerical arcana. Among the tidbits:
• Zero and double-zero been worn more often than you might think — 21 different players have worn them.
• The All America Football Conference (the rival league where the 49ers and Browns first played, before they were folded into the NFL) had its own uni numbering system. Centers wore 20s, guards wore 30s, tackles wore 40s, ends wore 50s, quarterbacks wore 60s, fullbacks wore 70s, halfbacks wore 80s and 90s, and numbers below 20 weren’t used at all. When the Niners and Browns entered the NFL, they had to redo their numbering schemes, which explains Marion Motley’s radically different uni numbers here and here.
• Mike Michalske wore nine different numbers during his time with the Packers: 19, 24, 28, 30, 31, 33, 36, 40, and 63.
• When John Madden coached the Raiders, he personally assigned uni numbers to his players, because “I’ve always felt you can put a number on a person that tells about that person.”
• Paul Brown only coached one pro player with a single-digit uni number: Monk Williams, who wore No. 6 for two games in 1968. Even after Brown had left the Browns, no Cleveland player wore a single-digit number until 1977.
• Karl Mecklenburg of the Broncos wore No. 77 throughout his 12-year career — except on Nov. 22nd, 1992, when he wore 97.
Like all sports books, this one may need frequent updating. When the book was published in early 2005, for example, Joe Nedney was one of five different players who’d managed to wear the same number with six different teams (No. 6, which he’d worn with the Panthers, Cards, Titans, Dolphins, Broncos, and Raiders). Since then, he’s broken the record by wearing it for a seventh team, the Niners.
Still, such minor bits of obsolescence put only the teeniest dent in the book’s excellence. Highly recommended.
Bumper Scar: Interesting note from longtime Uni Watch supporter and Helmet Hut impresario Curtis Worrell:
Over the years Riddell has slowly been forced to eliminate their brand from the outside of the helmet. First they lost the black “R” that used to appear on the right side rear, then they lost using both the front and back bumpers at the same time [the rear bumper now usually carries the team name, and now I've been told by an inside source that they cannot use the rear bumper at all -- they're stuck with the tiny front bumper. From the games I have seen, it sure looks like the truth.
The NFL really clamps down on this stuff, while licensing fees go up. It's amazing what they make the equipment managers do -- if a player uses a different brand shoulder pad, they must cover the brand name, in case the jersey gets pulled down over the pad (which of course does happen frequently). You should do a story on what the NFL makes these teams and equipment providers do -- I'd shoot myself! We [at Helmet Hut] have been in many locker rooms talking with the guys, and they want to pull their hair out. Actually, many of them have no hair anyways.
As you might imagine, I don’t have much sympathy for Riddell just because they can’t plaster their brand name all over the helmet (especially since they still get to brand the chinstrap). But I’m intrigued by the idea of asking an equipment manager about all this stuff. Stay tuned.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Unprecedented MLB moves last night in commemoration of 9/11: As usual, the Mets wore first responder caps, but so did their Monday-night opponents, the Marlins, marking the first time that the caps have been worn by a team other than the Amazins. Meanwhile, all other MLB teams wore American flag cap patches (umpires, too), which I believe is the first time since 2001 that such patches have been worn on a day other than Opening Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day. Some of the patches looked like they’d been applied a bit haphazardly, but apparently there were no debacles like this … Meanwhile, over in Pittsburgh, the Pirates debuted their memorial patch for Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O’Connor, who died last weekend. … Surprising development last night in Washington, where the Redskins wore black cleats (and also became the seventh Week 1 team to wear white at home). … Nick McAlister notes that Chester Taylor appeared to have something written on his uni numbers. I didn’t actually see the game — did anyone else get a good look at this? … Yesterday’s Comments section included a short discussion about the special commemorative balls that were used for the games in Cleveland and Arizona. That prompted a note from a source at Wilson, who writes: “Just a little info: Teams are allowed to create a ball for any special event, as long as the NFL approves. The logo must go on the valve panel for any of these events, unless it is an NFL-sponsored event (the Super Bowl, e.g.). We’ll do special footballs for the Thanksgiving Day games, the AFC and NFC Championships, and of course the Super Bowl.” … Latest diacritical discoveries by Jeremy Brahm here and here. … Got my first sheet of Uni Watch postage stamps yesterday, and holy shit do they look cool. … Was Ohio State DE Jay Richardson wearing a QB’s play-calling wristband on his belt last Saturday? (Good catch by John Boerger.) … When Hamas captured power in the Palestinian elections last winter, I noticed that party loyalists were wearing official Hamas baseball caps (additional photos here, here, here, here, and here). Eight months later, NPR’s All Things Considered show ran a commentary about the baseball caps yesterday. The audio file is available here. … Speaking of caps: Got a great note yesterday from reader Rob Tate, as follows: “After Wilfredo Ledezma was pulled in the 5th inning of Friday’s Tigers/Twins game, they kept showing shots of him in the dugout. He started playing his cap, folding it like a rally cap, then messing up the brim, and then in the next shot he’d torn the brim off the cap and was working on de-threading the cap by chewing on it. Tigers announcers Mario Impemba and Rod Allen had commentary on it.” Alas, the MLB.TV game video is from the Twins’ broadcast, not the Tigers’, and the Minnesota folks didn’t show Ledezma’s antics. Anyone else catch this? … The horror, the horror.

Note quite a uni note, but it looks like the NFL and Wilson have redesigned the game ball. Instead of just “NFL” on the ball, they’ve put a gold NFL shield on on side, and “National Football League” in gold block print on the other side. They’ve also rebranded the ball as “The Duke”, apparently to honor the memory of Wellington Mara…

I like purple and thought everyone was just bashing the Vikings because some people don’t like the color. Yesterday was the first time I saw the Vikings in action. It was horrible. I wanted them to lose just cause they looked stupid.
A girl wearing purple…perfecty acceptable. A 300 pound lineman wearing so much purple while playing football…hideous.

Hey, don’t fault the good people of Minnesota for keeping it real with purple! Actually, the new unis, awful as they may be, seem more royal blue than purple.

I think Chester Taylor’s “writing” may have been the strap from his shoulder pads coming up from underneath. Some of them have belts with holes to tighten them around the player’s torso. I think some paint may have rub on his number causing a raised effect.
Also, I think the umpires wore first responder caps for the Mets/Marlins game.

That press release is from March of 2006, when Tagliabue was still the commissioner. The new balls do have Goodells’ signature; on Thursday’s opening night game between Miami and Pittsburgh, they made a point of zooming in on the ball and showing Goodell’s name. Madden and Michaels also presented him with the kickoff ball, since it was the first “Goodell ball” used in a game.

when goodell was selected as commish, i assume they placed an immediate rush order enough to satisfy practice and games for at least the 1st 2 weeks, and the remainder of the order to be delivered as completed. the 5000 tagliabue balls were then to be donated to high schools with an emphasis on gulf coast high schools whose football programs were affected by hurricane katrina. it may have been during the eagles-texans broadcast…

Someone claimed on one of the other threads that the Redskins have gone all-burgundy. Now, I’m not a Washington fan, but I can’t recall them ever doing this. Does anyone know for sure whether they have? And if so, are there any pictures floating around?
On a related note, how soon before the Chiefs go all-red? Herm Edwards introduced the all-green look on the Jets; I wouldn’t be surprised to see him do it with the Chiefs. Here’s an idea of what it woud look like. McFarlane toys released an all-red Priest Holmes variant, then quickly pulled it off the shelves when they realized that the Chiefs had never worn an all-red uni. Herm may very well make it a reality this year……

Does Nike try to coordinate what the Oregon fans wear to the game with what the team wears on the field? Like the Penn State White Out, will there be a Diamond Plate Out? Or you on your ticket it tells you what shirt/paints combo to wear? North end of the stadium, dark green shirts with neon yellow pants; south end dark green shirts with white pants. Then some people on the home side at the 50 will have to wear white shirts to form a giant O, while on the other side, the white-shirted fans form a giant swoosh.
Or possibly two-sided shirts for the folks in the end zone. When Oregon’s kicking your way, you wear it dark green side out, but at the end of the quarter, you turn it inside out to show the neon yellow side.

regarding the Browns alternate “retro†uniform that was mentioned in Paul’s NFL preview column. The NFL store appears to have them in stock.
http://www.nflshop.c...
So, no “Browns†nameplate and no “AL†logo on the sleeve. BUT, the numbers appear to remain on the shoulders, which is not retro but was introduced in 1999. Hopefully the stripes will be true stripes and go all the way around the sleeve. To complete the look, it looks like they will have thinner pant stripes. Hopefully they will have stripes on the brown socks as well. Can a retro uniform be retro if it is not true to the past?
Why can’t teams do what OSU did this year: keep the stripes on tight jerseys and have the numbers over the sleeves and jerseys?

It is common for players other than the qb to wear the ‘wrist coach’, as you can simply place a blank piece of paper in the sleeve to keep track of something other than offensive plays; for instance, on defense it could be used to keep track of different audibles, as well as different blitzes or stunts for the line or the linebackers. Most likely the wearer would be the playcaller in the huddle, as #97 likely would be.

jason taylor had a nice pair of orange mach iii’s as well, although the only official members of the jordan brand stable are marvin and ahman. have you also noticed that when TO wears his air zoom super bad’s, he doesnt secure the velcro closures? also, on “is it the shoes”, TO mentioned he wanted a cleated version of the aj iii, his favorite. my all time favorite, the aj iv, is less than spectacular as a cleat when andruw jones wears it…

“he’d torn the brim off the cap and was working on de-threading the cap by chewing on it.”
Who was the D-Rays pitcher that tore his hat apart in the dugout last year against the Sox? I remember seeing it on NESN after he had been taken out of the game.

And sorry to bring this back up, but I was unable to post this yesterday…
To all the mathemeticians who were trying to figure out whether the 8th or the 17th was actually closer to the “halfway to St. Patrick’s Day†mark: it’s kind of hard to run a promotion on the 17th when the team’s 2000 miles away. (The Cubs might be able to pull off something like that, though.)
I believe why bother? was the point being made.

As Todd K. said, T.O. definitely was wearing the Super Bad’s with the ankle strap undone.
#93 is definitely not wearing the Blade II or the Blade. Notice how the black accent goes all the way around the toe. I looks kinda like the toe detail on the Air Max Panoramic. (I own a pair, that’s why it looked so wierd to me.)

Why? Well, typically speaking, people in Chicago are generally thinking about football in September and basball’s an afterthought. A little extra incentive to put asses in the seats doesn’t hurt, especially on the South Side.
Because of the large Irish-American population, St. Patrick’s Day is a major event. Unfortunately, it’s in March when the team is playing in Arizona.
Do they need to do this? These past couple years, probably not, but why not bring in Irish bands, Irish dancers, have the team wear green and auction off the uniforms for charity? People seem to enjoy it. Besides, I think the unis look really good.
And that’s a hell of a lot more on this subject than a Cubs fan really should be writing.

On the topic of the AAFC and old-time Browns, I always loved seeing old pictures of Otto Graham wearing #60 as opposed to his more familiar and retired #14. This is one of my favorite photos. (Notice the lineman “blocking” in the background…and the Chucks)

A little off topic-But am I the only one that is severly annoyed by ESPN’s new ’scoreboard’ on the bottom center for it’s NFL broadcasts? What happened to the tried and true corner box? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!! Do you guys like it?

See the stripes on the white shirt? They are the REVERSE of the stripes on the brown shirt. On the current shirts, the stripes on the white shirt, while still brown-orange-brown-orange-brown, are all the same width. On the old shirt, the middle brown stripe is thick!!! This lasted into the Jim Brown era.

No Cincinnati Bengals player wore a single-digit number from 1968 until 1984 when Boomer Esaison donned #7.

I think some of the new tv info boxes (all descendents of the original Fox Box) are placed just so idiot local tv sports guys can’t supersize the picture (blow it up) for their newscasts … a/la the George Michael Sports Machine.
Boy that looks like crap on a good TV set.

Alright. I can’t take it any longer. I have to admit it. I really like the new Nike “Briscoe High” commercials. Apparently, they’re going to play a full schedule. New commercial every week which shows highlights from that week’s fictional game. They’re following Briscoe High through the playoffs, where they’ll obviously win it all.
It’s clever and fresh and the unis aren’t awful, at least not yet.
#107 by Riff on 09.13.06 12:43 am |
Agreed, John. I think those commercials are great! It’s so funny to see those NFLers acting like high schoolers (which isn’t far from the truth in some cases). My favorite parts are Steve Young the paperboy and token fan in the stands, Dion Sanders as dad, and Matt Leinart “the new guy” on the sidelines with a clipboard. Classic. Good to seen the great Don Shula coaching again too.

Good lord, there are some stupid redskins fans….and they’re all on the extremeskins.com message boards. It makes me feel bad associating myself with them under the title of “Redskins Fan”. I don’t even know why someone would take the time to actually photoshop a monochrome horror like that (or why they were allowed to have photoshop in the first place).
I posted the pic of the Indiana U uniform earlier which started a little debate on the similarities between our unis and Oklahoma’s. In 2004, our uniforms were virtually identical to OU’s, which annoyed the heck out of me because whenever they’d show OU on sportscenter, I’d get confused and wonder why they would be showing IU highlights, only to realize there was an “OU” on the helmet. Last year, coach Terry Hoeppner changed it to the Crimson-Crimson unis, and I’m assuming it’s because of the similarity to the OU unis. Also, I guess he thought our guys looked meaner in all crimson…a noble thought, but an unfortunate sacrifice of aesthetics. Still beats those unis they made Randle El wear…
#109 by Terry Mark on 09.13.06 12:53 am |
I was pleasantly surprised to read some discussion about Indiana University’s football uniforms. Of the possible combinations they have, the only one I don’t like is crimson-on-crimson.
I say “crimson” specifically because up until 2001 or 2002, IU’s athletic teams were a mishmash of different shades of red and a multitude of IU logos, including the hideous logo. The new AD dictated that all IU teams adopt the same logo and color scheme and had a design firm produce an updated “IU”. It’s the only good thing this AD did, as he generally left the whole athletics department a mess when he left.
In general, all of IU’s teams today have a clean, classic look. For proof, go here. Fortunately, the team switched from Nike to adidas just in time.
I have been distressed to see, however, some black sneaking in as a trim color. The school’s colors are cream and crimson. It should stay that way.
Go Hoosiers!

I thought the same thing when I saw the picture. I swear I don’t recall the Redskins using that uniform in a game. Not that I am calling out Richard, the guy who posted the picture, but what looks to be a photoshopped picture is not the same as having them wear it in a game.
Which leads me to ask this question: Have the Redkins ever worn an all-burgundy uni in a game? In all my years of watching football I can’t say I have ever seen a picture of a game where they have.

re: AAFC
Otto Graham wore 60 at QB before switching to 14.

re: Briscoe
Funny that an all star squad of guys monsterously bigger than the other team (as visible in the handshake scene) needs a last-minute halfback option hail-mary to win. Perhaps Vick/Leinart is the new QB controversy…

You know, I was thinking about that today, about how I liked them too. But then I saw something i hated, and i didn’t get a picture of it, and hopefully someone can find one. If you look, their uni’s do not look bad, classic, but they have a stupid white side panel that runs almost horizontal. look close, you’ll see it.
on another note, any one see the arby’s com. where the kid is at bat, and he is thinkin arbys? he is rockin some sweet socks there, true sturups.

I, too, like the high school commercial. It’s fresh; it’s funny; it has Troy Polamalu Mmmm Hmmmmm. ‘Nough said.
As for the Vikes, I was watching the game with my mom, and she said, “I thought the Vikings wore purple. What happened? Those are blue.” Of course, that was enough for me to launch a diatribe about the ugly new uniforms. I even cited this site, but to no avail. She cared not a whit about random striping–just that the unis were not purple.

Not taking the calling out, but I have a feeling that those were actually worn during a game in the Steve Spurrier era. The only reason I say that is because why would the Redskins have rookies wear them for their trading card shoot (which is what the message board was discussing) without wanting to wear them in a game?
Glad we can all discuss this civily.

I remember a Monday Night game where the Redskins wore the all-white uni, and Madden and Michaels made a big fuss about the Redskins not wearing their burgundy pants. They were talking about how they believed that was the first time the Redskins had gone all white (which I don’t think is correct; I recall seeing a picture from the first Joe Gibbs era where a player, and unfortunately I can’t recall who, was wearing an all-white uni).
What bothers me is that I clearly remember this, yet I can’t recall them ever wearing an all-burgundy uni……
#118 by Mr. Met on 09.13.06 2:19 pm |
I should amend my last comment to include that the Monday Night game in question was during the Spurrier era. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they went all-burgundy during the Spurrier era as well; all I’m saying is that I can’t ever recall them doing it. And I watch a lot of games.
#119 by mike on 09.13.06 9:33 pm |
First off, defenders wearing qb wrist bands either on their wrists or on their belt is not a new thing at all. In fact players at all levels are doing this very thing. It helps with two minute defense, and getting complicated blitzes in quicker.
Secondlt, yes Joe Gibbs had a pentagon shapped flag on his hat, no doubt because the pentagon is in D.C.
