Everyone knows about the White Sox’s one-game experiment wearing shorts in 1976. But you might not know that the Chisox weren’t the only professional baseball team to wear shorts, nor were they the first. That distinction goes to the Hollywood Stars, a triple-A team that paired pinstriped shorts with non-pinstriped pullovers in 1950. The outfit was worn for warm-weather games, usually on weekends, for two seasons. You can read a short account of what it was like to wear the shorts, from Stars player Chuck Stevens, here.
Those photos and text come from The Grand Minor League: An Oral History of the Old Pacific Coast League, by Dick Dobbins, a copy of which was generously donated to the Uni Watch library last week by reader Ken Clark. Much like Rain Check, which I wrote about a few weeks ago, this book is filled with some spectacular photos of jerseys, caps, and small details. Here are some highlights:
• At first glance, it looks like the 1956 Los Angeles Angels (who were a minor league team in those days) were using stretch gussets very much like the ones seen on today’s MLB batting practice jerseys. But it turns out that the Angels also used the gusset stripe pattern on their pants!
• Lots of great caps here. I especially like that the Oakland Oaks used an acorn-shaped logo.
• It’s hard to see, but in 1940 the Stars experimented with chenille lettering, which is a puffy, textured weave, sort of like a towel.
• Always cracks me up when I see little underarm ventilation eyelets on old jerseys. Like, yeah, I’m sure those holes made a huuuuuge difference. (Also: Note the odd stitching pattern along the seam.)
• Striped pockets — nice.
• Can’t decide which sleeve patch I like better — this one or this one.
As for the shorts — which deserve a closer look — the real problem, it seems to me, is that the jersey and shorts don’t match. Like, was the fabric mill running a special on pinstriped flannel or what? Also, is that a satin belt? Yikes.
Finally, one last left-coast baseball note: Dave Eskinazi, who provided all the great photos in the Rain Check book, has an excellent photo project available on the web: a slide show documenting baseball’s early history in Washington state, filled with more photos from his amazing collection. You can see the exhibit’s home page, and click to begin the slide show, here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Excellent article here about Ohio State’s new jerseys. … Diacritical Update: We have a circumflex sighting, courtesy of Doug Brei, who snapped this photo of Rochester Rhinos player Matthew Delicâte last Saturday. … Underbill Update: Leaving aside Andre Ethier’s goofy self-portrait pose, it’s interesting to see that he spells out his uni number on his underbill (with thanks to Lauro Diazzesati). … Italy has finally added the fourth star to their soccer crest.

I was watching the USA basketball game briefly this morning and noticed something nice. No one on the USA team was wearing pants, Wade had really long socks and LEBron was back to medium length socks. Lets hope this is for good, and not just because of the rule change.

The Buckeyes new jerseys will be form fittting, which makes sense, however, next season the NHL is expected to start with form fitting jerseys, which will be a huge mistake IMHO. Hockey jerseys look great just the way they are!

The picture of the 1950’s Angels players pants show off the ivy covered wall and house in the background. This was, I believe, Wrigley Field in LA, home to the famous Home Run Derby that was rebroadcast a few yeras ago on ESPN.
If you get to see that series ago, note that some of the players, Mickey Mantle specifically, are wearing skin colored form fitting batting gloves.

While I think the city has officially shortened its name to “Los Angeles,” originally the two-word name was a contracted form of “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del RÃo de Porciúncula.” (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels on the River Porciúncula.) Grammatically speaking it’s not even the city “of angels.” Obliatory uniform content: How about some 1781 Dodgers throwback unis with “EPDNSLRDLADRDP” on the cap? Maybe articles and prepositions could be skipped for brevity.

After moving to the LA/OC area (Long Beach) for college, I quickly became affiliated with both the Dodgers and the Angels. Then the Angels went and called themselves the “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim”. What a load of crock! I can understand the desire to stake a claim in the LA market, but not after you’ve made a name for yourself with Anaheim in the World Series. It’s not like people don’t know about Anaheim (hello, Disneyland!). There’s nothing wrong with the name of a suburb, I mean we don’t call them the San Francisco Athletics.
What’s ironic is that the name change probably only means anything to those of us from Southern California. Growing up outside of LA, I saw it all as one big city. But once you’ve lived here for a while, you quickly realize that people here are fiercly territorial (South Bay, West LA, East LA, Long Beach, PV, San Fernando, OC, IE). Don’t tell someone from Orange County or the Inland Empire that they’re from LA.

Speaking of the Angels, I was watching their game last night in Seattle (prayers for Rafael Soriano) and caught a couple things:
-Kenji Johjima wears a footflap from a catcher’s shinguard under his mask as a throatguard. Looks like it would flap too much for my comfort.
-Kenji also wore what looks like the knee of a catcher’s shinguard on his elbow while batting. Plus his batting shinguard looked unusually tall.
-Mike Napoli’s chest protector doesn’t look like it protects much.
While reading about the Dodgers’ 16th inning win last night, I saw this photo of walk-off hero Ramon Martinez. Why in the world is he wearing black cleats? It doesn’t seem like he was traded recently. Was he a call-up?
The more I see of those Buckeye jerseys the the more I like. Especially the unique shape of the shoulder yoke.

Paul, isn’t striped pockets just another example of unecessary piping?
Are you just giving a pass to old-timey jerseys because of your fondness for nostalgia? I only ask because I bet you’d skewer any current jersey that showed up with piping on the pocket flaps.
I for one don’t mind good looking piping, and I think it can break up what would otherwise be a pretty boring solid block pullover.

Bringing this back to a uni related note, I’m glad the Angels haven’t put “LA” or “Los Angeles” on any uniforms…yet. Whereas I was a fan when Anaheim won the Series in ‘02 (and beat the hated Giants!), I now despise the Angels for their name change. Orange County is not L.A.!

Double numbers have always seemed to be popular at Ohio State, the only thing is they can not both be on the field at the same time, which during special teams can present problems. And on a side note, growing up in columbus and being a rabid fan, they really didn’t need to change a good thing. But the stripes may look the same as the helmet ones, but there seems to be an abudance of gray on the helmet, so wheres that on the stripe? And just for good measure, Michigan sucks
#53 by Brooks Reuter on 08.30.06 2:42 pm |
First of all, there are duplicate numbers is because there are usually over 100 players on all Div 1 school rosters, and other divisions as well. However, you can only have 1-99, when taking pictures and practice you can’t have guys not wear uniforms, so you do the logical thing and double up on numbers.
Also, I don’t understand why everyone gets up in arms over Nike and Reebok and UnderArmour putting thier logos on the uniforms. While I don’t like the two different colored sleves, or the dot matrix undershirts, I have always been a fan of Nike gear. All of my cleats, wristbands, gloves, and socks when I played were all Nike, by choice. Throughout my life, since I was old enough to decide, I only wear Nike shoes, I even own a pair of Nike dress shoes. I have no explaination why, I just like the brand and have been very brand loyal. While it may not be Paul’s cup of tea, did you ever stop to think that there are many players and people out there who love the “logo creep.” I love the blog, and am a Uni Watch fan, however “logo creep” is the one item that I disagree with.

Back to the topic of piping:
One thing I love about English Premier League soccer uniforms is that the teams have a traditional main kit that is usually historically-based and stays pretty much the same (see Manchester United and City, Arsenal, Blackburn, Newcastle, etc.), but the change strips usually involve a complete departure from the team’s official colors. When Chelsea (the Blues, wear blue jerseys and socks with white socks) wore their all black change strip this past Sunday, they used blue piping on the jerseys and shorts, a nice reference to the team’s official colors. Notice that the team’s logo is even rendered in black and white and the (in my opinion) wonderful use of piping is the only blue on the uniform. Bonus points for the pinstripes on a soccer jersey.
I’m done now.

I didn’t realize that, thanks. Though, I did notice that St Jospehs used the SJU for short while watching some games on ESPN. I guess since St Joseph’s was founded in 1851, and St John’s came around in 1870, the real SJU isn’t in Queens.
Thankfully, Thunder the Mascot is no more. He looked like a homemade Halloween costume. Or a prop in a bad high school play. It was pathetic. Not surprisingly, I couldn’t find a picture. Nor could I find a picture of the horse and lightning bolt logo. But, can anyone tell me what a horse has to do with “Red Storm” in the first place?

Being a life-time Orange County Resident and Angels fan, I better chime in. I completely understand why Arte Moreno changed the name. If I was in Mr. Moreno’s situation I would have done the same thing. LA sells, Anaheim and California do not. Although I love Orange County and have never lived in LA, but I could really care less what the team is called, as long as they win! (Which they aren’t doing right now) :( I was a Rams fan when they were in Anaheim and known as the “LA Rams.” As long as they play in Anaheim or Orange County, you can call them whatever they want!
The “…of Anaheim” at the end is cheesy and makes them sound like a minor league team. Just “Los Angeles” Arte! I know he had to keep “Anaheim” in for legal reasons.
By the way, great pic of an old Angels jeresy, Thanks! This proves that the Angels were from Los Angeles before the Dodgers! The Angels are OG LA Baby!

The reason many of us don’t like to see a sportswear manufacturer’s logo on a team uniform is that the relationship between fan and team is unique — players come and go, but we keep rooting for the colors, the logo, the uniform. That bond shouldn’t be cheapened by the presence of some other logo. The only logo that belongs on a team uniform is the team’s logo.
And yes, I’m well aware that many players like to wear sportswear logos — which is precisely why such logos should NOT be allowed on team uniforms. The sportswear companies have helped to create a branding culture in which athletes are more excited about playing for Team Nike than about playing for Ohio State (or whoever), and that’s seriously messed up.
I’m not saying Nike products suck; I’m saying that the branding culture they’ve fostered sucks. And so do many of the designs through which they’ve fostered that culture.

ISU Fan and Johnny Boy….also an Illinois State alum. It is probably a good choice for the ‘Birds to go with Nike, but that will give us uniforms just like everyone else. It can’t hurt for FB though, their old uniforms were BORING. Not that they need to get carried away with a new design, but a change was necessary. Odds are the hoops unis will like team USA’s and the SEC teams from last year with the shoulder stripe. Go You Redbirds!

How much more convincing could you possibly need to permanently change the Chargers’ uniforms?!
IT LOOKS SO FREAKING GOOD!!!

Although there seem to be a couple of differences, perhaps there was a different year where the pants stripe was the lightning bolt. (Those jerseys were way before my time.)

I was always kind of partial to the logo that looks like the St. Louis Cardinals letters. Classy-looking and looks great on the caps.
I’m in St. John’s Law school now, but I remember when I first started there as an undergrad, the RedMEN were still alive and well. I still have an old SJU Redmen cap from my undergrad days. Those were the days.
And to reconcile the huge time disparity, I got my Bachelor’s, worked for about 10 years, then returned back to get my JD. No Super Senior here either LOL

So when my beloved Chargers pack up and move to Anaheim, I’m sure Alex Spanos will name the team “The Los Angeles Chargersâ€.
You do realize that if that (unfortunately) happens, they’ll be taking back their original name.

Alright, you guys are really getting to me. Watching the Tigers-Yankees tonight and from the pitchers mound camera angle, with the ump and catcher blocking part of it, the interlocking NY logo painted behind homeplate looks an awful lot like the UnderArmour logo. Trying to find a good shot of it.
And, on the Buckeyes note, Lawrence Wilson should be on the Nike payroll with such a ridiculous amount of logo creep.

Todd,
Sorry for the late response, but no doubt, I noticed LeBron’s switching between the Zoom LeBrons and 20-5-5’s; thanks for the nice pics!!

Umm… the logo behind home plate is the interlocking NY. Y’know the Yankee logo, which pretty much hasn’t changed in 100 years….

Either way, it’s too much.
I’ve got nothing against making a quality product, or putting your logo on it, just don’t do it THAT many times

The tidbit about the fourth star on Italy’s soccer crest reminded me that Indiana University’s men’s soccer team, which has won seven NCAA championships, wears seven stars on their jerseys. See here: IU men’s soccer
Just as an aside, they’ve got a good shot for No. 8 this season, as they’re ranked sixth in the country after starting 2-0. Go Hoosiers!

Just to clarify on the LSU white/purple uniforms, here’s the story:
LSU traditionally wore white at home, which was contrary to the tradition of visitors wearing white. At some point the NCAA made it an official rule that visitors would wear white and home teams would wear color. LSU successfully petitioned for an exception. LSU now wears white at home UNLESS the visiting team objects. If the visiting team objects, LSU wears purple.
Very few visiting teams (maybe 5?) have objected and forced LSU to wear purple. I think all but one of those have gotten absolutely clobbered for it, as the team and the crowd take it as an insult to tradition and use it as a motivating factor.
