Good morning Uni Watch commUNIty. Paul is doing some traveling. I’m Todd Krevanchi and I’m taking care of today’s entry.
When the FIBA World Championships and Olympic Games come around every few years, it not only gives us a chance to see how our boys can mess up bringing home a gold medal, but also allows us to see how our apparel manufacturers can mess up the uniforms.
One of the earliest demonstrations of logo creep on the international stage occurred at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Apparel manufacturer Descente was given the contract to outfit the men’s basketball team. Three uniforms were issued, in red, white, and blue. The uniforms were quite classy. Vertically arched chest lettering, no last names on the back and a simple USA on the sides of the shorts, but the Descente logo was on the upper-right shoulder of the jersey and the left leg of the shorts. And since Converse was the exclusive Olympic footwear provider, they found it appropriate to throw their logo beneath the waistband on the shorts.
In 1988, at the Seoul Games, the Red Army beat the U.S. and the red uniform was dropped. Descente was once again called in to outfit the squad, and they used the same template from the ’84 games, except that last names were added to the jerseys. The white and blue uniforms still featured Descente-driven logo creep, but this time the Converse logo was gone.
1992: The Dream Team. This time Champion outfitted the men’s hoopsters. This Olympiad featured a new USA Basketball Logo (still in use today), which functioned as the main jersey insignia and also appeared on the sides of the shorts. Once again, white and blue uniforms were used, with red still on the hanger. Champion displayed its corporate logo this time on the left shoulder and by the left waistband of the shorts.
USA Basketball maintained this classic design for the 1994 World Championships in Ontario, Canada. Dream Team II again played with the traditional white and blue.
Then came 1996 and the Atlanta Games. They must have held a contest for area middle school students to design these, which were cluttered with stars, script lettering, and new typography. The white and blue uniforms now had a waistband star and fields of stars down both sides, as well as the USA basketball logo on both the jersey and shorts. And Champion added their mark as well.
The 1998 World Championships were held in Greece, and Champion held tight with the same design. But there was a redesign for the 2000 Sydney Games, beginning with sleeveless tees. In addition to the stripes that Y out to a single star on either side of the shorts, you have the USA Basketball logo on the waist. On the jersey, another USA Basketball logo, a new neck mark, and, of course, the oversized Champion logo. And let’s not forget the USA Basketball star on the back. Again, only white and blue.
In 2002, the World Championships were held in Indianapolis. This was the start of Reebok’s relationship with USA Basketball, and the uniforms took on more of an asymmetrical approach. The stars returned to the shorts and jerseys on the right, but not on the left. The neckline was now a solid color. And the team got smoked.
In Greece in 2004, the trio of unis returned — red, white, and blue. Reebok still had the contract and made significant adjustments, including horizontal stripes down the sides, a collar-style neckline along with the neck star, and curved piping. The back star also returned to the mix. But one thing didn’t change: The team got smoked — again!
That brings us to this year’s World Championships in Japan. Nike now has the USA Basketball contract, and they’re made some interesting adjustments to the uniform. Red has apparently been dropped once again, since it hasn’t been used in any preliminary games. The white and blue uniforms show quite a bit of piping, wedges of red, white, or blue, and the piping connecting the arm- and neckholes that Nike has used in their college uniforms. Meanwhile, the back of these uniforms looks like something out of Nike’s college football template. I guess I still don’t understand the wraparound feature. These uniforms have come upon some serious scrutiny over the last month based on their design. In architecture, the mantra “form follows function” has lived for over a century. However in Nike’s case, with these uniforms, they missed the boat on both form and function.
I’m interested to see what the Beijing Games bring us…

The main reason the 1984 jerseys didn’t have names on the back is because Bob Knight was the coach. Indiana and Texas Tech have had names on the back under his helm.
At least the US jerseys are still sponsor free, unlike the Puerto Rico Burger Kings.

Using firefox you can just click down the mouse “wheel”-thingie and it opens it in a new tab which was pretty convenient.

Personally, I think the new USA basketball unis are awful. The side panels, the random piping – terrible. I do like that the trend of staying away from the USA Basketball official logo, as that’s a bad look too (see Dream Team). The logo is fine, but not for the front of the shirt.

Wow, I don’t think I have actually liked any of the uniforms since ‘84. The dream team unis could have been OK, but the USA Basketball logo is weak in and of itself. No wonder we keep getting smoked. And how do they plan to do anything THIS year if they can’t even keep their shorts up (on the court… whatever they want to do is fine off it. lol)

Two brief remarks: 1. The current uniforms stink, which is hardly a surprise considering who makes them. 2. The team should always have three uniforms, red, white and blue . . . for obvious reasons.

Why always navy blue? Does anyone else think it’s odd that navy has taken the place of a more standard blue in so many US uniforms? It seems as though thi s is an issue in so many Olympic uniforms these days…
And wow, that Hollandsworth arching is rather extreme. His name hasn’t always looked like that, has it?

Those uniforms are tight as are most of the USA Basketball designs over the years. The 1992 and the 2000 years being my favorite designs.
I designed the 2000 uniform through the NBA Creative Services group with Christopher Arena from NBA Outfitting, and it’s my favorite. Love the pant details. Very classy.
In 2000 we added a secondary star logo (see link)

..and the team uses that a lot over a wide array of products.
We also re-introduced the USA lettering from the 1984 jerseys onto the 2000 designs which they use today. I think the lettering is outstanding!
I am not a big fan of this years uniform silhouette but I think it’s still a good look for the overall USA brand.

Yes, Hollandsworth’s name has always looked like that, except with the Braves, who at the time had the vertically arched lettering and different font.
The navy looks better than a more royal or traditional blue, in my opinion. And that’s saying something because I’m a University of Kentucky fan.
No, the umps don’t wear throwback uniforms, even when both teams do.
And Mike, I know you meant to say IU and Texas Tech have NOT worn names on their backs under Knight, but I just thought I’d mention that.

I really don’t think the guys in Beaverton did a horriffic job with the unis this go around. Given their track record, they could have done a lot worse. The 1996 and 1998 unis are by far the worst…downright U G L Y! Take out the horizontal stripes and the unis from the Athens games would have been OK.

Funny thing about designing international unis in 2000… FIBA has a manual that describes in excruciating detail what the size of the numbers, names and sponsor logos can be on the unis which makes the process somewhat restrictive.
The USA Basketball jersey is always the exception to other countries jerseys because it only has one sponsor logo on it, this year it’s Nike…but other countries have multiple logos (think NASCAR racer outfits) and so the placement process can be numbing…

Great job, Todd; you did Paul proud. As for the unis, I agree with Ryan (#8) about ‘84 being the last good international uni. The rest range from bland to wretched, including the latest with the random piping and bib effect in back. ‘04 is the worst with the hideous horizontal stripes on the sides–just ugly.

The blue on the flag is more navy than royal, but if you interview people on the street, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find many who identify the US with red/white/navy over red/white/royal. An interesting phenomenon…

Speaking of nerds, I think I entered the upper echelon last night with my dream. In it, Matt Leinart pointed me in the right direction deckedout in his Cards uni and the Patriots were playing the Chiefs in the Super Bowl (not possible, I realize, but either way, it was a big game). The Pats were wearing all blue and the Chiefs were wearing all red with a few players sporting navy pants. Yes, I know. I said the same thing, “WTF?! UniWatch has to see this!”
I was also obsessed with getting a picture of the Cubs zig-zag pinstriping that we mentioned here the other day, only in the dream they looked more like a seismograph.
After reading what I wrote, I realize I’m wierder than I thought.

Great job Todd! I remember, for the Gold Medal ceremony for the Dream Team, certain players (Michael Jordan, etc.) had to wear American Flags around their necks so they would the cover the Champion logo (I think) on their warm-up suits. This was because Jordan, and others, were sponsored by Nike. The dangerous affects of logo creep. You can see Jordan wearing the flag here.

I can’t stand basketball jerseys that are sleeveless tees (they make the player look like he’s wearing a jersey that’s two sizes too big) and I can’t stand throwing in all the stars, etc. The Athens uniforms could have been decent without those horrendous black and red horizonal striped side panels. These uniforms (1996-2004) all have something in common: they violated the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid).

If you’ll remember, back in his UNC and early NBA days, he wore the short shorts just like everyone else. He started wearing the baggier shorts around 1990 or 1991, just like several other players. So it’s more of a movement that was independent of any one person, and is instead can be seen in a group of players at this time.

No. USA Basketball is a non-profit organization and the national governing body for men’s and women’s basketball in the United States. As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions.

I’ll explain myself as a fair few of you seem to have taken it to heart.
I have absolutly no interest in Basketball, their attire maybe but basketball no. Now whilst the article was well written it seemed to lack the usual opinions making it a follow through of the USA Basketball team.
This was meant to be constructive critisism if the guy is doing other stuff for Uniwatch and I believe they’re valid.

I bet if I dig deep enough in my dresser I can still find my 1992 Chris Mullin Team USA jersey. If ever a logo needed to be updated, it’s the USA Basketball one.

No offense to Todd, who did a very good job with the topic he chose, when I heard the topic of the day would be the FIBA world Championships, I was pretty excited, only to be let down by it JUST being Team USA oriented. I wanted a little bit of conversation on the teams involved, like Paul’s World Cup topic that was on espn.com.
