Actually, they’re based off of the ‘94 World Cup design. The gold shirt has been around since the late 90s, when USSF still wore fuschia as an alternate.

BTW, before you knock a bright pink shirt on a referee, you have to realize that I never had to change shirts back then. If you showed up in fuschia, you could rest assured that neither team was going to wear a comparable color.

As for the Juventus question, they will not be wearing the half-and-half jersey that was a possibility at one point. They are going with traditional stripes. And seeing as how they are not playing in the Champions League, I don’t think the half-and-half will be an alternate, either.

For those who haven’t found the link, NFL.com has a video of the new officials’ uniforms in their Video on demand section on the right of the page. The officials will still be wearing knickers in nicer weather, but will have long black pants when the weather turns cold. On the shirts, the black stripes actually become more narrow as they reach the waist. For the cold weather kit, the white stripe on the sleeve continues right down the leg of the pant. I think the black pants look horribly unprofessional — they’re basically black track pants. The shirts look like the NFL’s response to MLB’s old turn ahead the clock nights. Unfortunatley, they’ve turned them ahead to that God-awful remake of Rollerball. However, as a college soccer official, I’d like to thank the NFL for coming out with something that looks goofier than what we have to wear during the fall: OSI NISOA Shirts

The league clearly wants to keep their officials as comfortable as possible in order to perform at the highest level. With all the technology and new materials that helps keep athletes cool or warm, why shouldn’t the officials take advantage of it too.

Two words: Under Armour

By the time the football season comes to a close, I officiate a few games in cold weather. I wear a few layers, and I still have room for movement. I wear a jersey lined with a special “weatherbeater” material, a turtleneck, an UnderArmour mock turtleneck, and a t-shirt. I’ve never been cold, I can still move my arms freely. I also wear thermal UA tights underneath my weatherbeater-lined knickers, and that’s more than comfortable.

The only body parts that feel the cold significantly are my hands and feet, and redesigning the uniforms will not change that.
