Meanwhile: Minor league baseball and hockey teams revise their unis all the time, and for the most part nobody cares. But I received several dozen e-mails yesterday about the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, who just unveiled their new logo and jersey, much to the apparent displeasure of many Cream City residents. A poll on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s web site finds anti-logo sentiment running at over 70%.
Now, the Admirals’ previous logo and jersey were nothing special. But the new design isn’t exactly an improvement. Has there ever been a weaker, more characterless skull rendition than this one? And there are so many creative ways you can depict a skull — check out, for example, the composite skull being used to promote the current horror flick The Descent. Couldn’t the Admirals have done something like that, only with toothless, steroid-pumped hockey players instead of nubile young actresses with heart-shaped asses? Would’ve worked perfectly!
Yesterday there was a hilarious video on the Admirals’ web site, trying to explain the “story” behind the new logo. Unfortunately, they seem to have taken it down today, but as Nicole Haase points out, “It’s not good when you need an explanation to understand a logo.”

Uni Watch News Ticker: Reebok has created a special “VY” logo for Vince Young, which he’s been wearing on his wristband. According to this article, “soon fans will be able to buy shirts, hats and just about everything else imaginable with the VY logo on it.” Oh boy. (Thanks to Thomas Courtman for the link.) … Good catch by Victor Vilaplana: “On July 23rd, the Padres wore AIDS awareness ribbons during their game against the Giants. When they wore those same blue alternate jerseys on August 1st, the ribbons had been removed but there was some glue residue, which made most of the Padres look like they spit up on their shoulders.” … Remember Ted Lilly’s “DJM” cap inscription, which he refused to explain? It had disappeared for a few games, but it was back last night, at least for the game’s first few innings. Lilly must have changed caps at some point, because later in the game his headwear was inscription-free. … Several readers have checked in with reports of a segment that aired last night on the NFL Network’s NFL Total Access show. Apparently the on-field officials will have new unis this season, including an increased amount of black on the jerseys (especially on the sleeves), a different uni number/position design on the rear jersey, and — get this — black slacks (not knickers) with a white stripe for cold-weather games. I don’t get the NFL Network, so if anyone recorded this show — or can manage to record a rebroadcast of it — please try to come up with some screen-grabs for us. … As many of you are aware, the Padres routinely write the starting pitcher’s uni number in the dirt at the back of the mound. This led to an odd situation last night, as described here by Jean Lefebvre: “When Brandon Backe came out for the bottom of the 1st, he inscribed his No. 41 to the right of Woody Williams’ No. 17. Top of the second, Backe’s number was rubbed out by Williams. At this point Backe gave up.” … Ethan Rowley and Brian Kerr both wrote in last night to say that Albert Pujols appeared to have something written on the back of his jersey, to the left of his uni number. I looked, but I don’t see it. Anyone..?

I kind of like that Admirals’ logo. I think its a big improvement over the previous logo and jersey. I’m kind of surprised that Paul doesn’t like it since he tends to support logos that are more simplistic. But I guess I was wrong

The Woody Williams/Brandon Backe numbers-in-the dirt thing is HILLARIOUS!!! It only would have been better if Backe had come out for the bottom of the 2nd and scratched out Williams #17. Could a beanball war been started by less??

Milwaukee would have been better trying to look like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers skull. My problem is the Bucs are pirates (and criminals), where an admiral is supposed to be a man of honor. That’s more of an issue to me than the lopsided eyes and detached jaw.

My guess for the “brick red” mystery is the Cincinatti Reds. We’ve already heard they’ll be replacing the black with navy, and a darker red looks nice with navy blue. Plus, Mr. O’Grady alluded to the phasing out of sleeveless jerseys.
Regardless of who’s doing it, it should be a nice change. Brick RedBurgundy/Maroon is the one color that’s missing from MLB teams (as a primary color).

I posted this in yesterday’s comments, but basically a lot of the Admirals players will be in the NHL this year, so they’re saying their working with a skeleton crew - thus the new logo.
And he apparently is an Admiral, but he’s an Admiral of a ghost ship.

I cant put my finger on what that “VY” symbol reminds me of, I sort of looks like a ear of corn. Maybe its thisthe Boy Scout “Webelos” symbol.
Also, Im against the Admirals logo for the same reasons as Michael Maurino and Greg. Admirals are not supposed to be pirates and there is a plethora of naval insignias, symbols, etc that could be drawn on to make a real nice logo for a team with that name.

I think Paul touched on this in a previous posting, but the best part of the old Admirals’ jersey is the BREWERS patch.
Also, Kudos to Brandon Backe, yes he should have wiped out Williams number (or maybe he should have written Clemens number). And it’s a good thing Backe and the Astros weren’t playing the White Sox, who knows how Ozzie Guillen would have interpretted that “unwritten” rule of wiping out the pitchers’ number from the back of the mound.

As was seen in the cool video on the Admirals website yesterday, the story is that their old original logo admiral got lost at sea so they used police sketch artists to keep updating his image for the newer logos (the Admiral did look older in each one). However, he was recently found after being trapped at the bottom of the ocean for years so he had to adapt and become a skeleton. Although I don’t mind the jersey, the logo is way too plain for a skull. My favorite detail is that on the full picture of the admiral he has a peg leg and uses his detachted skeleton leg for a stick! How cool is that?

I was just admiring how much better the University of Buffalo logo is than the Sabres logo, I know we covered it earlier, but I can’t believe a professional team would put out something so terrible.
Anyway, the Helmet Project has a section dedicated to all the new helmets in college football this year, which can be found at the bottom of the left-hand scroll, or just click here. While the helmets are mostly in smaller Division III, I am sure helmet guru Charles Arey would appreciate the help.

Before they took it down, the story on how the logo came to be was along the lines of: The old original cartoony mascot went out to sea and his ship sunk. He was then replaced by the last 3 or so logos, but now, he has resurfaced as the skeleton guy, but the cold water faded the old blue to ICE blue. But he’s back. Hence the “Never Say Die” phrase below the typeface.
Creative, but I have to agree with whoever said that a logo shouldn’t need explaining.

Did they intentionally make the number tiny so that drunken angry fans can’t see who it is, look up his name, and shout abuse at him?
There’s no reason to change the referee jerseys; they’re timeless and distinctive. I liked the typeface that they used in the 1980s (it looks a bit like what the Steelers use, only wider); maybe they could bring that back, but they’re just fine as they are.

1. Although i dont understand the connection between the skeleton and the maritime industry, i have to say that at least the Admirals logo isnt as bad as the islander fisherman from a few years ago. Maybe if they gave the skull a meaner disposition it would help. He looks a little sleepy eyed to me.
2. The Mets sent Mike Pelfry to AAA norfolk yesterday and there is a rumor that it is due in part to his refusal to change his mouthguard from blue to black for the road game.

I noticed the screen grab was from the FSN feed during the bottom of the 6th for Pujols. I noticed the writing during the bottom of the 9th from the ESPN feed. I was out covering Lions camp this morning and one of the officials in town was wearing a new-fangled jersey. There are no photographs allowed after individual drills, so I couldn’t shoot it. Wonder if anyone has heard anything similar around camps?

THOSE are the new referee uniforms? Ugh. They look hideous. Way too much black. I don’t like the thin strips on the centers and the thick black on the shoulders and sleeves. The black shorts look dumb, and the numbers are way to small. Go back to the old traditional style, it looks much better. Now they look like soccer refs- ugh.

The colors aren’t bad, but the skull leaves something to be desired. It just looks like a weak skull. If you’re going to have a skull, it should look at least a BIT scary.
Also, I find it weird that the slogan “Never say die” is associated with a very dead thing - a skull. Kind of a weird standard on that one. (”Never say die . . . kinda like this dead head bone we have here. Or something. Never mind, just ignore us. The logo and slogan people never talk here. We just stare at each other and slash each other’s tires.”)

Wow, those NFL referee uniforms are ugly. I don’t see what was wrong with them before. With the exception of the stripes themselves, it was nice having referee uniforms consistent through most levels of football in this country.
Then again, maybe these are special training camp uniforms. Teams have special practice jerseys, so why not the officials as well? Something a little lighter to wear during the brutal heat everyone is experiencing right now.
I think I’ve seen referees wear black shorts in training camp in the past. I know that referees wear black shorts during the NBA summer league games too.

I happen to have that Tracy McGrady Raptors jersey with the giant raptor on it. I happen to think the ugliness makes it spectacular. Something about the 90s inspired the NBA to put giant animal logos on their jerseys (Raptors, Bucks, Grizzlies, and my personal favorite, the hawks jersey with the giant hawk stretched accross the front)

Actually, they’re the Norfolk Admirals now. And not only do they have to suffer the indignity of sharing a nickname with another team — they’re also the Blackhawks’ top affiliate. (The Hampton Roads Admirals played in the ECHL.)
And according to this page, here’s how the Milwaukee Admirals got their name:
“The original owner, Reed Fansher—sold team to Edwin J. Merar. Merar renamed the team ‘The Admirals’ after appliances he sold in his store”

With regards to the black Blue Jays uniforms… I remember a Mets broadcast a few years ago (probably 98 or 99 when the Mets blacks were new) the announcers were talking about how the material that the black uniforms were made of were cooler than the uniforms the grey uniforms were made of (the were playing in Florida)… it could be the same concept…

The Astros have Brick Red as one of their three colors (along with Black and White) and they have brick red alternate jerseys, although they have been wearing the road ones since late June instead of the road grays. From Astros.com: “The Astros are using the red jersey more than the gray mainly because of comfort. The red jerseys are a lighter weight material, which keeps them cooler during day games in some of the hotter cities.”
This makes me wonder if they even have the Cool Base jerseys in gray.

As an Admirals fan, I’m on the fence. I like the colors and I like the away jersey. I just don’t think it’s an upgrade over what they had.
As for the 2 teams with the same nickname, we’ve been the Ads since the early 70s. Norfolk has used it since the late 80s.
Also, our team was named after a line of refrigerators.

Anyone notice how the mets butcher the look of the uniforms with the solid blue hats by wearing black cleats. Complete uniform disaster. But maybe its not their fault. Does major league baseball have rules on a teams base color for cleats. I can imagine that each member of the team has to wear the same color on a game to game basis, but does is it one color for the whole
season? They would be much better served wearing black cleats for the black and blue hat/uniform days, and blue for the blue hats. If its not the MLB uni nazis then is it the players not wanting to go back and forth between cleats? anyone have any input on this?

I was watching a Cubs game a few weeks ago and Len Kasper said that each team could choose one of its jerseys to be made in a Cool Base version (although he didn’t actually use the term Cool Base) and the Cubs chose the regular home jersey. I guess it was an obvious choice for the Astros to go with one of their road jerseys.
And for the record, the Astros’ colors are brick red, sand and black.

No, there is not rule against it. The Indians in the 90s - early 2000 wore Red sleeves/socks/shoes @ home and Navy sleeves/socks w/black shoes on the road ……

Good catch JTH, I forgot about sand as a color (thank God they don’t have an alternate jersey in that color).
I wonder why teams only choose one jersey to be made into a Cool Base Jersey. It seems that you would want most, if not all, of your jerseys to be made into that if it’s cooler than a normal jersey. This would seem especially true if you’re team doesn’t have a home stadium with a retractable roof and air conditioning.

astros/padres in throwbacks this afternoon… mid-80’s I’m guessing… astros in the psychadelic rainbow.. and the pods in a very tame brown and yellow look…
aggrivating that many players are wearing their pajamas in the throwbacks… jeez, couldn’t they respect a little tradition at least in “old” unis??!!??

One thing that always bugs me about the throwbacks, would it be too much to get helmets right? The cool-flow helmets esspecially look wrong along with the old unis.

If the Reds go to red and navy that would be the worst decision they could make. If they went with a maroon or burgundy that would be ok, but just red and navy would look too much like the Indians, Nationals, Braves, etc.

Why does this story remind me of the old Islanders promotion “who kidnapped Nyisles?” Where all the NHL mascots would come in as “suspects.” Eventually, Carlton the Bear (Toronto) kidnapped and killed the Islanders mascot, all detailed in bullitens handed out before every game. To LITTLE KIDS! I’m still scarred.

Something doesn’t seem quite right about that Padres cap. The SD looks too small and skinny, and the yellow front panel doesn’t curve like it’s supposed to:

I always thought that cap, teamed up with today’s throwback was the best in Padres history & they should go back to that full-time. It always bothered me that they couldn’t replicate that cap & the early 80s version with orange correctly.

I think the new Admirals logo is great–well, “very good”, anyway. I give the jerseys with the disembodied head a B+, but the full skeleton design is way cool. I don’t actually know or care who the Admirals are, but I could see buying a t-shirt with the full skeleton on it.

Why are the Astros wearing home whites? Didn’t they wear those “Big Stick Popsicle” unis in grey back in the day? Looks kind of funky watching two teams in white doing battle. The numbers on the upper right thigh of the Astros pants are awesome!!

Technically, the Astros road from like 1975-1993 was a light cream color. I can’t tell from the pics, but I think they’re wearing the cream road version.

As an Admirals fan, I am disgusted with the new logo… it’s childish, simplistic, and in no way representative of what an “Admiral” is… the jerseys I really wanted to see the Admirals in were their jerseys previous to the last ones…
A few other things: The Milwaukee Admirals were in the IHL (now defunct) previous to joining the AHL… the AHL at the time, and still, had the Norfolk Admirals, resulting in the teams having the same names… it did make for an interesting game when the Norfolk Admirals came to Milwaukee to take on the Milwaukee Admirals
And lastly, the new logo closest resembles the skeletal remains of Timmy Turner from the Fairly OddParents

How could the 1983 White Sox uniform be listed amongst the worst? Maybe I have a soft spot for the ‘83 Divisional Champs, but, seriously! No way are those unis worse than say the all orange Orioles, or the black Mets uni, the burgendy or Phillies one, or christ! even the 1970s Sox uniform…but I will admit that I do have a soft spot for the 1977 South Side Hitmen.

Hey guys, I know this is not necessarily uniform related, but it is appearance related nonetheless.
Yesterday, during the Yankees-Blue Jays game, I noticed that the Jays’ newly recalled second bagger Ryan Roberts has several tattoes along his wrists and forearms. He also has one on the left side of his neck. I figure that he has to be the most VISIBLY tattoed player in the Major Leagues. I can only think of a few other players with tattoes. Brett Myers has one on his wrist. Tim Hudson does too. Jason Giambi’s tattoes become visible occasionally when his sleeve is rolled up. Tattoes are more prominent in football and basketball, but that is probably just because those sports allow for more arm and/or leg exposure than baseball. Can anyone think of any other baseball players that are very visibly tattoed?

I didn’t watch the Jays-Yankees game, but is there a chance that the black jerseys they wore were Cool Base jerseys, which they may not have in gray? Seeing as how the black jersey is the same for home and road (unlike the mets, who have different home and away black tops) they may only have one set of Cool Base, which would be in black. A quick look at the MLB shopunder authentic uniforms shows only the black available as a Cool Base, whereas the other two are just standard.

Justin Miller, used to pitch for Toronto, among other teams, was so tattoed that he was told to wear sleeves by MLB to cover them up. Here is Justin Miller and I can’t find a suitable picture of Ryan Roberts.

This was confusing, then I got where they were going… and now I think the ad agency played a trick on the admirals. This is from their website: The Admirals new logo is actually and aged version of the team’s logo from the late 1970’s, a short young lad, who was lost in the waters of Lake Michigan back after the 1981 season and was recently found. The only thing that managed to keep him alive all these years was his fighting spirit. In fact, after one of his legs fell off, he used it as a hockey stick to hone his skills.
After over 25 years of being underwater, the red white and blue uniform had faded to the black, silver, and ice blue, and had turned his fresh young face into a skull. Despite all of his changes, his fighting spirit never wavered and that relentless spirit and tireless work ethic have given us our new battle cry: Never Say Die!

For those who haven’t found the link, NFL.com has a video of the new officials’ uniforms in their Video on demand section on the right of the page. The officials will still be wearing knickers in nicer weather, but will have long black pants when the weather turns cold. On the shirts, the black stripes actually become more narrow as they reach the waist. For the cold weather kit, the white stripe on the sleeve continues right down the leg of the pant. I think the black pants look horribly unprofessional — they’re basically black track pants. The shirts look like the NFL’s response to MLB’s old turn ahead the clock nights. Unfortunatley, they’ve turned them ahead to that God-awful remake of Rollerball. However, as a college soccer official, I’d like to thank the NFL for coming out with something that looks goofier than what we have to wear during the fall: OSI NISOA Shirts
